A good 'foundation' is the key to clever make-up

A good 'foundation' is the key to clever make-up

By 'foundation', I am referring to the base of your make-up. This includes concealer and foundation.

When you're decorating a room, you don't just slap the new paint onto the old without first scraping off the unwanted wallpaper, and cleaning down the paintwork. You need a good base from which to apply the colours that you have chosen - and this goes for make-up, too.

Cleanse, tone and moisturise your skin, then apply a primer, a concealer and foundation to create a smooth base - you can then apply all the colour you want with blusher, eyeshadows and lipstick.

Analyse the colour of your skin tone

Light

  • If you have an ivory or porcelain complexion, then your skin tone is Light.

Light-Medium

  • If you have a rose beige, light olive, or ash brown complexion, then your skin tone is Light-Medium.

Medium-Dark

  • If you have a yellow-beige, medium olive or rose-brown skin, then your skin tone is Medium-Dark.

Dark

  • If you have a dark olive, bronze, rich beige or black complexion, then your skin tone is Dark.

SUMMER / WINTER

  • You have cool skin tones, with a pink or blue undertone, and make-up that echoes these tones will make you look healthy and alive.
  • Avoid honey-based cosmetics which could make you look yellow and extremely unwell!

SPRING / AUTUMN

  • You have warm skin tones, with a golden or honey tone, and make-up that echoes these tones will make you look healthy and alive.
  • Avoid blue-based cosmetics which could make you look rather grey and drawn!

Choose the right foundation for your skin tone

Use the simple table below to help you choose the right 'foundation' colours for your skin tone:

Your skin tone is >> Light Light-Medium Medium-Dark Dark
Silk Foundation Primer for all skin tones
Liquid Silk Foundation
Summer / Winter Alabaster
Porcelain
Porcelain Bisque French Beige
Spring / Autumn Alabaster
Ivory
Ivory Buff
Tan
French Beige
Bronze
Shadow Lifting Pen Light Light Medium Dark
Foundation colours for every skin tone

The Silk Foundation Primer feels like a skin serum.

You use the tiniest bit so the bottle will last ages. The primer irons out the creases, leaving the skin soft and smooth enough to apply the liquid foundation.

Liquid Silk Foundation - contains sunscreen

  • Ivory, Beige, Buff, Tan and Bronze foundations have a definite warm tone to them
  • Porcelain and Bisque are for cooler skin tone
  • French Beige suits darker skins with either cool or warm tones
  • Alabaster works with both cool and warm skin tones, and is great if you have a neutral skin tone

Shadow lifting pen

The Shadow Lifting Pen can be applied before or after your foundation. Opinion amongst the so-called experts is divided so it's your choice, really.

But I would definitely recommend NOT using your fingertips for foundation - you will be transferring grease from your fingers onto your face, which is probably the thing you are most trying to avoid! Try using a corner of your foundation sponge or an eyeshadow applicator instead.

It is available in Light, Medium and Dark. It has a soft applicator which does not drag the skin like a brush so, in my opinion, is much kinder to your skin.
