Suits

Suits are truly versatile this season. For dressing up, wear them with a spread collar shirt and striped tie, or with a patterned shirt and no tie for a more casual day, or pair the jacket alone with a sportshirt and jeans for a fun, hip look. Yes, the day has finally arrived when it has become acceptable to break your suits up and wear each piece as a separate. And take note, flat-front pants are quickly replacing pleated as the standard suit pant.

Preferred suit patterns are the pinstripe and chalkstripe. For a sophisticated look, finish the look with a shirt in dark stripes. Navies and greys are still smart, but try a new suit in a deep olive brown to be truly up to date.

Sartorial suits are best for dressy looks, but the country suit is another great choice as a daytime suit. These suits have a sports coat feel with more texture to the fabric.

Ties

The widely spaced stripe (rep) tie is still strong. However this season they look a bit more non-traditional in colouration; for example, rust/orange/plum. New this season are whimsical circle patterns, reminiscent of the “mod” look of the ‘60s.

Shirts

The medium to wide spread collar looks best this season in dark stripes.

TIP: The hippest look in coordination is to wear all stripes – stripe suit, dark stripe shirt, stripe tie. But beware - putting this ensemble together requires the assistance of a professional, so seek out a knowledgeable salesperson to help you put the look together.

Sport Coats

For this season, vertical stripes are predominant. Look for tones of brown or greys, often combined with black tones. These coats look great with a tie or without, equally at ease in the office, or spicing up casual trousers or jeans. They can also double as an outerwear piece.

Pair your sportcoat with one of the following:

  • light or dark striped shirt
  • turtleneck sweater
  • shirt plus zip-front cardigan
  • French cuff shirt, open at the neck and sleeves

Dressy Sportswear

Slender top coats are new this season and can be worn as a substitute for a suit jacket or as a topper over jeans and a shirt. Other hip looks include overshirts worn as toppers – try one in cashmere with leather trim. Five-pocket trousers (not necessarily jeans) are great choices for a dressy casual look – look for corduroy or the new stretch wool - and pair with a bold stripe shirt. Resist the temptation to tuck in the shirt; many styles are designed without a conventional shirt tail so they can be worn out.

Casual Sportswear

  • Sweaters are smart in luxury yarns, such as cashmere and merino wool
  • Zippers are important details – choose one with a zip-neck or a zip-front cardigan
  • Choose flat-front pants – nothing says new and modern more than this style
  • Cargo pants continue to dominate as do jeans with a low-rise, boot-cut leg, and a “dirty” wash
  • Track and soccer shoes complete these casual looks
