Lady-like romance and a sleek
silhouette
The Overall Mood
Winter 05/06 is a breakthrough season that sees non-conformist dressing
ideas such as mixing colours and patterns. Expect individual expression
of unusual colours and fabric textures and infinite possible combinations.
Colour
The newest colour mood for winter is turquoise and cerulean green, which
you will find often mixed with brown. There will be an influx of rich
ruby reds, plums, crimsons, purples and pinks; also autumnal pumpkin
and orange and lots of greens - from bottle, to pine and sharp lime.
Soft and muted pastels will still be around, especially greyed pinks
and blues. Dark brown will be the core colour of choice but black and
white will continue as a classic option.
Fabrics
In this season of contrasts both colour and fabric textures are mixed
to create the new mis-matched effect. The key combinations are smooth
fabrics, worn together with fabrics that are rough, textured or decorative.
Tweed will remain a key fabric of the season, but will continue to
be given a lift from the ordinary with brighter threads woven in to
create lively colour mixes.
Velvet will be seen in all its forms - true velvet, velour, crushed
and chenille. Trapper lumberjack checks, blanket weaves and flannel shirtings
are used with fur or Shearling trims, while warm metallics such as bronze,
copper or old gold will create lustrous sheen and reflect the glamour
of the season.
Ultra-light fabrics grow in popularity too and we will see chiffons,
printed silks and iridescents used in layers for both evening and daywear.
La Rose Anglaise
The English Rose will get a French twist, as chic smoky Parisians are
mixed into traditional British country life. It is a classic tailored
look with retro references from the 1940s and the focus on neat-cut
tweedy styles with nipped-in waists, lean skirt shapes that herald
feminine elegance.
Key pieces will include: skirt and jacket combinations, capes and swing
coats, 'prim and proper' tailored jackets, waistcoats. Cardigans, cabled/argyle
knits and tweed culottes.
Boho Chic
An alternative to the primness and tailoring of other themes, this look
has a more relaxed feel. The bohemian attitude to dressing, which will
follow on from the spring season, experiments with layering fabrics
and patterned garments to create individual feminine looks with just
a touch of the eccentric.
Key pieces will include: floral-print tea dress, tulip-shaped skirts,
chunky knits, jacquard knits, tweed jackets, rollneck sweaters, satin
camisoles and checked shirts.
Metropolitan
This smart urban wear with a clean and uncluttered look. We will see
masculine influences and deconstructed tailoring to create this business
look. The trouser suit creates a balance between masculine severity
and sexy femininity. Blazer jackets are close fitting with well-defined
shoulders and trousers are omnipresent, varying from a narrow cut to
a wider leg.
Key pieces include: trench coats, pencil skirts, traditional men's shirt
styling, mini trench, fine knitwear, fitted coats, and knitted figure-hugging
dresses.
Gold Rush
The Golden Age of Hollywood provides inspiration for this retro glamour
theme. A sophisticated eveningwear look to pander to the celebrity
in us, will draw on influences from the 1920s and 30s. The emphasis
will be on glamour and form-hugging styles.
Key pieces include: hourglass slinky gowns. liquid silk dresses with
frilled skirts and nipped-in waisted bodices, tuxedo jackets, fur capes
and wide-leg trousers in fluid fabrics.

Predictions for Autumn/Winter 05/6
Daily Express - February 2005
Dresses
For Christmas 2005, cocktail prom-style dresses in colourful silk fabrics
will be in vogue. Empire-line minis will also make a comeback.
Jackets
The military jacket will continue to be a good look for autumn. The bolero
jacket is also here to stay but brocade and embellished detailing will
update its look. Cape-like jackets in smart navy are also emerging
as a strong statement for autumn/winter.
Skirts
Skinny skirts will be back again in tweed for day and satin for night.
After a summer of gypsy skirts, the nation will long for a sleeker
silhouette. Pencil skirts will finish below the knee and come in everything
from fine-knit to stretch jersey. High-waisted puff-ball styles and
floaty numbers will have a romantic feel about them and will be cut
daringly above the knee.
Detailing
Wear fringing and rosettes on jumpers and jackets, chunky gold chains,
pearls, tapestry, faux fur and braiding. Ribbons will be everywhere,
trimming hemlines and adding interest down the sides of trousers.
Accessories
Seventies-style handbags will be a popular choice, as will burgundy,
midnight blue and chocolate brown rectangular leather bags with skinny
straps.
Shoes
Sexy platform stilettos will be in vogue as will round-toed shoes. Cute
pointy ankle boots will be favoured by Eighties romantics. Strappy
fur boots will go down well in more adventurous colours - try blues
and pinks. Mid-heeled loafers will look hot with fishnets.
Dress down
In contrast to the love of all things lady-like, there will be more rugby-striped
sweatshirts and jumpers this autumn. Over-sized, baggy, belted wool
jackets will keep chills at bay.
Colours
Rose-petal red, burnt orange, dark copper, chocolate brown, hot pink,
turquoise, violet, banana, sky, coral, plum, mustard, olive green,
rust, magenta, copper, leopard, snake & ladder prints
Fabrics
Lace, chiffon, crepe, tweed, taffeta, satin, silk and crochet knits
