THE OVERALL MOOD
It's going to be a colourful season with the range of colours and styles
for Spring/Summer 2005 reflecting a growing optimism in fashion. The
return to grown-up dressing continues with an emphasis on glamour and
classic style. There are many retro references relating to past eras
but these are combined in a new way creating fresh looks for the new
season. Pieces can be worn with current favourites to make an individual
stvle statement which is very much the mood of the moment.
COLOUR
Colour is a dominating influence on the season. The palette moves from
soft pastels in Modem Romance to the bright whites and vivid bolds of
Pool Party:
- White - on its own worn head-to-toe or mixed with brights
- Pastels - muted and soft tones reflecting the mood for transparencies
- Brights - candy coloured: turquoise, lime, yellow, jade green, pink
- Neutrals - warm neutrals are used together in layered garments
- Metallics - touches of metallics were seen in most collections
FABRICS
- Satin - set to continue as a fabric reflecting the glamour and dressed-up
shine of the season
- Transparents - fabrics with see-through qualities such as fine laces
and loosely-woven linens are used in layered dressing
- Chiffon - in large or small scale florals are used in tops and also
dresses and skirts for a very feminine look
- Prints - are literally huge, encompassing large-scale multi-colour
geometrics and florals to delicate micro florals and stripes
- Denim and Twill - continue as strong casual wear fabrics which can
be mixed with elements of different fashion themes for a fresh look
THEMES
Pool Party
Poolside chic - images of palm trees, island sunsets and cocktails invite
us to indulge in jet-set exoticism. The look is dressed up and reminiscent
of the late 1970s disco era. Kaftans provide the ideal beach cover-up,
while halter necks and bare-back tops reveal. Wrap and tie sarongs,
plunging necklines, layered printed chiffon dresses and shorts also
feature.
Tourist Class
Inspired by the 1950s and those first holidays abroad, capturing the
tourist spirit of the early resorts such as the Riviera. There is renewed
interest in shirts and shirt dressing together with the return of the
skirt and jacket. Try waist-cinching dresses and skirts, fitted cropped
jackets, Bardot neck tops, micro cardigans and a coloured trench coat.
Castaway
A mismatched, layered, casualwear look created from a mix of ethnic safari
and explorer styling. Colours and fabrics are sun faded or weather
beaten. Uniform styling is still apparent, but fabrics are much more
textured and roughened. Decoration and ethnic influences are taken
from Morocco and the Far East. Cool loose kaftan tunics, pyjama style
trousers, and embroidered neck trims and details.
Modern Romance
A return to soft femininity reflecting an eclectic mix reminiscent of
Victoriana but mixed with more modem pieces for an individual style
statement. Laura Ashley-inspired floaty milkmaid dresses, camisole
tops, lingerie-inspired satin corsets, lace knit cardigans, and sheer
layering in tops and dresses.

Margaret Russell visits the main trade fairs in Milan every March and
September bringing back fabulous German shoes and Italian coats and accessories.
"I've just placed an order for over a thousand pairs of shoes for
Spring 2005. The colours are dreamy - lots of pinks and lilacs, plenty
of white and multi-coloured. There's so much glam and glitz around for
next season, and a multitude of butterflies
.."

SPRING/SUMMER 2005 by Vogue
This season is set to be one long holiday:
- Designers draw inspiration from various continents: Africa, for safari
jackets and animal prints; Asia, for Indian influence and Oriental
charm
- A nautical theme means plenty of blue, from azure to ultramarine
- Or opt for acid brights, best in abstract prints
- Finally, head to the beach in tropical styles, then sparkle at sunset
in sequins.
If you're wondering how best to invest the Christmas cash, a Burberry
trench coat could be the answer. A fashion classic - dateless and eminently
stylish - it's an unregrettable buy that will last forever and your grandchildren
will love you for it. Wear it in the rain or sex it up with heels and
shades.
Jackets
So much choice - ponchos, capes, cropped jackets, short-sleeved cashmere
cardigans, shawl cardigans
Knitwear
The new shape is short and loose, cut for fluid movement and laid-back
chic. Knits look strong this summer in crayon-like zigzags and regatta
stripes; while twinsets take on a sexy, modern look.
Accessories
From oversized to mini, it's a season of extremes:
- Hats: Shield yourself from the rays with a floppy hat; go as wide-brimmed
as you dare. Or, make it short and neat. Alternatively, dress down
in something sporty
- Shoes: Walk high or low this summer, go for pretty-bejewelled flats
or towering wedges
- Bags: Huge oversize bags tower over micro styles
Nudes
The new neutrals: from soft taupe to the palest pink, they're the answer
to sexy, grown-up chic.

2005 Colour Directions
The industry experts selected future colours that "convey a respectful,
serious nature, yet touch the soul."
CMG's color professionals noted that the "spa" experience
adds a spiritual nature to color, and refreshes, rejuvenates and cleanses
the palette. Consumers desire comfort, stability, and security, but optimistically
yearn for bright and fresh signs of a better world to come. While special
effects diminish, colors appear to be infused with light from within.
That optimism is reflected in the color forecast for 2005.
CMG forecasts that, by 2005, the attitudinal cycle will swing toward
indulgence and away from the current mood of abstinence. Simultaneously,
the business cycle will trend toward practical expansion following the
current risk adverse/safe decision climate.
FASHION
Fashion is a movement, a seasonal blending and layering. Three emerging
directions influence the new color for 2005:
- Rustic: antiqued, vintage, distressed, tea-dyed, dusky
- Urban Sheen: layered special effects, translucent, complex structures
- World Spiced: textured, refreshed basic shades reinterpreted
Clay Pot
International spice blends with global rustic influences into a shade
suitable for men, women, accessories and cosmetics. The solid shade,
inspired by old tapestries, rug, and textiles is familiar and comforting.
Good Earth
This rugged and rustic explorer adventures to red rock country and metropolitan
rock piles. This personalized, aggressive protector is up-country to
urban for menswear, womenswear, accessories and cosmetics.
Thistle Bloom
This vintage, retro, and antiqued dusky purple will be enhanced with
special effects such as metallics and pearlescents, and aluminized
into shimmer and glitz. When behaved, it acts as a neutral in the softest
tint, and when muted is reminiscent of fog-dusted orchids and lilacs.
Thistle Bloom signals fashion's return to purple.
Late Night Blue
As replacement for black, this saturated blue gives depth, and indicates
trust and respect for our heritage, patriotism, the military and their
uniforms. It is denim morphed into the darkest of hues, and become
richer than black in menswear, womenswear, accessories and cosmetics.
Sulphur
Khaki goes green and becomes an urban survivalist shade. An edgy neutral
with techno undertones, Sulphur enhances layering and can be iridescent,
translucent or shimmering.
