COLOUR
Colour is important for Menswear for Spring / Summer 2005, either used
in contrasting ways for a bold colour statement or by layering using
similar hues of the same colour:
- White - on its own or with everything else
- Pastels - bright toned pastels; lemon, orange, pink. lime, framboise,
turquoise
- Brights - primary red, yellow, French navy, pink
- Neutrals - warm neutrals are used together in layered garments
- Blues and sand replace grey and black as suiting colours
- Ecru is important in linens
STYLING
Spring / Summer 2005 is a strong season for jersey, casual jackets and
tailoring:
- Layering is key - with different plays on proportion and colours
- Details such as accessories are simplified and essential for creating
the total look
- Trousers are narrow for suits or pyjama style with drawstring for
an easy fit
- Every type of short continues
- Jackets are un-constructed with a garment wash or over dyed look
FORMAL WEAR
The trend for dressing-to-impress continues with a subtle retro elegance
taken from luxury travel and resort styling of the French Riviera in
1930s and 1950s. There is a closer attention paid to details to finish
the look with particular emphasis on accessories such as belts, cufflinks
and bags. Jackets and trousers are co-ordinated but un-matched, close
tonal shades create the opportunity for subtle layering. Colours are
chalky and the fabric appears worn, supple and soft to the touch. The
trend is towards two or one button jackets and away from three buttons

CASUAL SUITING
The suit is de-formalised:
- Casual fabrics in cotton and linen blends move into traditional suit
designs
- The Blazer jacket is the tailored item of the season
- A combination of the Beckham influence and the variety of suiting
stripes make blazers one of the most attractive options of the season
- Worn `Beckham' style, a pinstripe jacket can be teamed with an open-necked
shirt and denim jeans of all descriptions
- Denim is essential to make the tailoring look casual.
JEANSWEAR
For denim the newest look is textured, and treatments include distressing,
resin coating and elaborate washes. Deep colours dominate; denim is
tinted and overdyed in organic vegetable dyes.
SHIRTS
Shirts are the dominant statement of the season:
- The fabric focus is on freshness and lightness
- They act as the decorative influence of the Summer wardrobe
- The newest look is for multi-coloured checks
- Tone-on tone stripes in barely tinted hues echo the feeling for strong
pastel colours in outerwear
- White grounds complement strong pastel and satin stripe looks
- Casual shirts range from western to surfing styles
- Linen in light voiles, slubbed looks usually in white faded and washed
look cottons
- Crinkle and crepe effects
- The printed shirt with stylised florals and paisleys
JERSEYWEAR
Laundered pastels feature with retro prints, placed prints and embroidered
surf motifs.
Washed out sunset prints, surfing and classic drawn from Hawaiian themes.
Polo shirts with a retro feel are striped or with placed motifs and graphics.
JACKETS
The blouson shape is simplified and pared down.
The shirt influence extends into short belted raincoats.
Technical finishes ensure performance and provide shine and lustre.
Fabric constructions are lighter and feel 'barely there'.
